Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup (120g) all purpose flour
  • 3 Tbsp granulated sugar
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • ½ tsp salt
  • 6 Tbsp milk
  • 1 large egg
  • ½ tsp vanilla extract
  • 3 Tbsp vegetable/canola oil
  • 1 bag Wilton red candy melts
  • 1 bag Wilton white candy melts
  • 1 bag Wilton blue candy melts

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325 degrees F.
  2. Spray a donut pan with cooking spray.
  3. Use a paper towel to lightly spread and remove excess spray from the pan.
  4. In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, baking powder, and salt.
  5. In a separate bowl, combine the milk, large egg, vanilla extract, and vegetable/canola oil.
  6. Pour the dry ingredients into the wet ingredients bowl.
  7. Stir the mixture just until combined.
  8. Transfer the donut batter to a large piping bag or a Ziploc bag with one corner cut off.
  9. Pipe the batter into each donut hole in the pan, filling each about 2/3 full.
  10. Tap the donut pan gently against the counter to release any air bubbles.
  11. Bake the donuts for 10 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
  12. Remove the donut pan from the oven.
  13. Let the donuts sit in the pan for 5 minutes.
  14. Carefully transfer the donuts to a wire rack.
  15. Allow the donuts to cool completely before decorating.
  16. Melt about 1/3 bag of the white candy melts using your preferred method (microwave or stovetop).
  17. If microwaving, start with 1 minute at 60% power, stir, then another minute at 60% power, and stir again.
  18. Allow the melted white candy melts to cool for about 5 minutes.
  19. Transfer the melted white candy into a shallow bowl that can easily fit a donut.
  20. Dip each cooled donut into the white candy melts, allowing excess to drip off.
  21. Place the dipped donuts on a cooling rack and allow them to harden.
  22. Melt about 1/3 to 1/4 bag of the blue candy melts.
  23. Allow the melted blue candy melts to cool for 5 minutes.
  24. Transfer the blue candy melts into a small squeeze bottle.
  25. Draw the blue corners onto the white-dipped donuts using the squeeze bottle.
  26. Use a toothpick to help spread out the blue candy melts if needed.
  27. Melt about 1/3 to 1/4 bag of the red candy melts.
  28. Allow the melted red candy melts to cool for 5 minutes.
  29. Transfer the red candy melts into a small squeeze bottle.
  30. Draw red stripes across the white-dipped donuts using the squeeze bottle.
  31. Once the blue corner is semi-set, transfer a small amount of white candy melts into another squeeze bottle.
  32. Add white polka dots to the blue corner of each donut.
  33. Allow all the candy melts to harden completely.
  34. Store the finished American Flag Donuts in an airtight container.

Notes

Measure flour by spooning it into the measuring cup and leveling off.
Don’t overmix the batter; mix just until combined for tender donuts.
Ensure donuts are completely cool before decorating to prevent the candy from melting.
Cool candy melts for 5 minutes after melting so they are not too runny.
A Ziploc bag with a snipped corner works great as a piping bag.
