Festive baked donuts spiced with cinnamon and nutmeg, topped with a rich chocolate ganache and plenty of Christmas sprinkles.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1¼ cup all purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar packed, light or dark
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
  • 1 egg room temperature
  • 4 tablespoons unsalted butter melted
  • 1/2 cup buttermilk room temperature
  • 1/3 cup Christmas sprinkles plus more for decoration, optional
  • 4 ounces semi-sweet chocolate chopped
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream or heavy whipping cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Grease donut pans well with butter or nonstick spray.
  3. Lightly dust pans with flour.
  4. Tap out excess flour from the pans.
  5. In a large bowl, sift together the flour, baking powder, nutmeg, cinnamon, brown sugar, granulated sugar, and salt.
  6. In a medium bowl, whisk together the buttermilk, egg, vanilla extract, and melted butter.
  7. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients.
  8. Stir until just combined.
  9. Stir in 1/3 cup of Christmas sprinkles.
  10. Be careful not to overmix the batter.
  11. Use a piping bag or a zip-top bag with a corner snipped off, or a spoon, to fill the donut molds evenly.
  12. Fill average-sized donut molds half full.
  13. For larger donuts, fill them between 2/3 and 3/4 full.
  14. Bake for 10-12 minutes.
  15. Check for doneness with a toothpick; it should come out dry.
  16. Let the donuts cool in the pans for 2-3 minutes.
  17. Remove donuts from the pans.
  18. Let donuts cool completely on a wire rack.
  19. Chop the semi-sweet chocolate using a serrated knife.
  20. Place the chopped chocolate in a heatproof bowl.
  21. In a small saucepan on low heat, heat the heavy cream until just before it starts to boil.
  22. Pour the hot cream over the chopped chocolate.
  23. Do not stir the chocolate and cream.
  24. Allow the mixture to sit undisturbed for 3 minutes.
  25. Stir the chocolate and cream until smooth to form the ganache.
  26. Dunk the cooled donuts into the ganache.
  27. Set the ganache-dipped donuts on a baking rack.
  28. Sprinkle with additional Christmas sprinkles, if desired.
  29. Allow the ganache to set before serving.
  30. Enjoy!

Notes

Ensure all cold ingredients like egg and buttermilk are at room temperature for best results.
Do not overmix the donut batter; stir until just combined.
Allow donuts to cool completely before dipping in ganache to prevent melting.
Use good quality sprinkles to prevent color bleeding into the batter.
