Incredibly creamy and rich mashed potatoes featuring cream cheese, sour cream, and butter for the ultimate side dish.

Ingredients

  • 5 pounds potatoes
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 6 ounces cream cheese
  • ½ cup butter
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper

Instructions

  1. Peel the potatoes.
  2. Cut the potatoes into 2-inch cubes.
  3. Place the potato cubes in a large pot.
  4. Cover the potatoes with cold, salted water.
  5. Bring the water to a boil over high heat.
  6. Cook the potatoes until they are tender when pierced with a fork.
  7. Drain the cooked potatoes thoroughly in a colander.
  8. Place the empty pot back on the hot burner for a minute to dry it out.
  9. Add the butter to the hot pot.
  10. Pour the heavy cream into the pot.
  11. Heat the butter and heavy cream until the butter is melted.
  12. Return the drained potatoes to the pot.
  13. Begin to mash the potatoes gently.
  14. Add the salt to the potatoes.
  15. Add the black pepper to the potatoes.
  16. Add the sour cream to the potatoes.
  17. Add the cream cheese to the potatoes.
  18. Continue mashing until the potatoes are smooth and lump-free.
  19. Garnish with fresh chives, if desired.
  20. Garnish with extra butter, if desired.
  21. Serve hot.

Notes

Use starchy potatoes like Russet or Yukon Gold for the best texture.
Do not over-mash the potatoes, as this can make them gluey.
Warm your heavy cream and butter slightly before adding for a smoother result.
Taste and adjust the seasoning (salt and pepper) as you go.
