Ingredients

Scale
  • 24 cupcakes (baked and cooled)
  • 3 tubs vanilla frosting
  • Gel food coloring (blue and red)

Instructions

  1. Scoop one tub of vanilla frosting into a bowl.
  2. Scoop a second tub of vanilla frosting into a separate bowl.
  3. Add a small amount of blue gel food coloring to the first bowl.
  4. Mix the blue food coloring well until evenly distributed.
  5. Add more blue food coloring if desired and stir until you achieve your preferred shade.
  6. Repeat the coloring process with red food coloring in the second bowl to create red frosting.
  7. Cut off the very tip of a disposable piping bag, if using.
  8. Insert one piece of the coupler into the tip of the piping bag from the inside.
  9. Insert the icing tip onto the other piece of the coupler.
  10. Screw the icing tip firmly in place onto the piece on the piping bag.
  11. Fill the prepared piping bag with the blue frosting.
  12. Squeeze out any air from the open end of the bag.
  13. Tightly twist the open end of the bag closed.
  14. Repeat the filling and sealing process with the red frosting in a separate piping bag.
  15. Repeat the filling and sealing process with the remaining plain white frosting in a third piping bag.
  16. Start by piping a ring of blue frosting around the outside edge of a cooled cupcake.
  17. Apply steady pressure to the piping bag as you pipe.
  18. Slowly release pressure on the piping bag while simultaneously pulling the piping bag away from the cupcake.
  19. Continue this motion to form long frosting strings.
  20. Create a second ring of blue frosting just inside the first blue ring using the same technique.
  21. Carefully remove the piping tip from the blue frosting bag.
  22. Clean the piping tip thoroughly to remove any blue frosting.
  23. Attach the cleaned piping tip to the piping bag filled with white frosting.
  24. Using the same piping technique, pipe a ring of white frosting inside the blue ring of frosting.
  25. Remove the piping tip from the white frosting bag.
  26. Clean the piping tip thoroughly again.
  27. Attach the cleaned piping tip to the piping bag filled with red frosting.
  28. Pipe a small ring of red frosting in the very center of the cupcake using the same technique.
  29. Repeat the decorating process for all remaining cupcakes.

Notes

Always use gel food coloring for vibrant colors that won’t thin your frosting.
Ensure cupcakes are completely cool before frosting to prevent melting.
Practice piping on parchment paper first if you’re new to it.
Clean your piping tip between colors for crisp, defined lines.
