Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 ¼ cup whole milk
  • 2 ¼ teaspoon Active Dry Yeast, or 1 packet
  • ¼ cup Honey
  • 4 tablespoons melted butter, divided
  • 1 large egg, at room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 4 cups (480 grams) all-purpose or bread flour

Instructions

  1. Bring the whole milk to a near boil in a small saucepan over medium heat. Look for steam and small bubbles forming around the edges of the pan.
  2. Remove the milk from the heat and let it cool down to a lukewarm temperature, between 80-90 degrees Fahrenheit.
  3. In a small bowl, combine the cooled milk, active dry yeast, and honey. Stir gently until well combined.
  4. Let the mixture sit for 5 minutes until it becomes foamy, indicating the yeast is active.
  5. In a large bowl, combine 3 tablespoons of the melted butter, the yeast mixture, the room temperature egg, salt, and half (2 cups) of the all-purpose or bread flour.
  6. Mix slowly until the ingredients are smooth and well incorporated. Use a stand mixer with a dough hook if you have one, or mix by hand with a sturdy spoon.
  7. Gradually add the remaining 2 cups of flour, mixing until a shaggy dough has formed.
  8. Knead the dough for 8 minutes. If using a stand mixer, let the dough hook do the work. If kneading by hand, transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface.
  9. After 8 minutes, knead the dough by hand for a few more minutes until it is smooth and elastic.
  10. Lightly spray a large bowl with cooking spray.
  11. Place the kneaded dough into the greased bowl, turning it once to coat the top with spray.
  12. Cover the bowl tightly with plastic wrap.
  13. Let the dough rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it has doubled in size.
  14. Once risen, gently punch down the dough to release the air.
  15. Lightly flour a clean, flat surface.
  16. Transfer the dough to the floured surface and roll it out until it is approximately ½ inch thick.
  17. Fold the rolled dough in half.
  18. Gently seal the edges of the folded dough.
  19. Using a sharp knife or pastry cutter, cut the dough into 24 even-sized squares.
  20. Lightly grease two baking sheets.
  21. Arrange the cut dough squares on the prepared baking sheets, leaving some space between each roll.
  22. Cover the baking sheets loosely with plastic wrap or a clean kitchen towel.
  23. Let the rolls rise again for 30-40 minutes, or until they have doubled in size.
  24. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) while the rolls are completing their second rise.
  25. Bake the risen rolls in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the tops are a light golden brown.
  26. Melt the remaining 1 tablespoon of butter.
  27. Remove the baked rolls from the oven.
  28. Immediately brush the tops of the warm rolls with the melted butter.
  29. Serve the Texas Roadhouse Rolls warm, ideally with Copycat Texas Roadhouse Butter.

Notes

Ensure your milk is lukewarm (80-90°F) to properly activate the yeast without killing it.
For best results, let the dough rise in a warm, draft-free place like a slightly warm, turned-off oven.
Don’t skip the second rise; it’s crucial for achieving light and fluffy rolls.
Brush the baked rolls with melted butter immediately out of the oven for a beautiful shine and extra flavor.
