Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup chopped white chocolate
  • ¼ cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tablespoons orange zest
  • 3 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
  • ½ teaspoon orange extract
  • oil-based orange food coloring, optional
  • ½ cup powdered sugar, divided

Instructions

  1. Place chopped white chocolate into a small, wide container with a sealable lid.
  2. Set a strainer and a spatula within reach.
  3. Add unsalted butter and orange zest to a small saucepan.
  4. Bring the butter and orange zest mixture to a boil over medium heat.
  5. Whisk constantly for 1 minute once boiling.
  6. Pour in heavy whipping cream while continuing to whisk.
  7. Continue to cook and whisk for another 1-2 minutes or until bubbles form along the edges.
  8. Remove the saucepan from heat.
  9. Hold the strainer over the container with white chocolate.
  10. Pour the orange butter mixture through the strainer into the white chocolate.
  11. Use a spatula to press the orange zest into the mesh, extracting as much oil and flavor as possible.
  12. Discard the contents in the strainer.
  13. Let the mixture sit for one minute.
  14. Add orange extract to the mixture.
  15. Add oil-based orange food coloring, if using, to the mixture.
  16. Whisk until most of the chocolate is melted; a few solid pieces are okay.
  17. Seal the container.
  18. Chill in the freezer for 1 hour or until the mixture is firm enough to work with.
  19. When ready, add 1/4 cup powdered sugar to a new sealable container.
  20. Add another 1/4 cup powdered sugar to a small bowl.
  21. Have plenty of damp cloths or paper towels handy for cleanup.
  22. Remove the truffle mixture from the freezer.
  23. Use a spoon or cookie scoop to scrape out about 1 tablespoon of mixture.
  24. Roll the mixture between your hands to form a ball.
  25. Drop the ball into the bowl with powdered sugar.
  26. Toss the truffle to coat.
  27. Place the coated truffle in the prepared storage container.
  28. Repeat this step until all the mixture is used.
  29. When all truffles are formed, seal the storage container.
  30. Gently shake the container to coat the truffles with the remaining powdered sugar.
  31. Transfer the storage container to the freezer.
  32. Allow truffles to chill for 1 hour or until firm.
  33. Serve as desired.
